Background

Archer and Hobb Fine Tea Merchants was originally opened as an Australian family owned tea rooms and tea retail store in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. The business has received over 75 five-star reviews for service excellence on Google. Our focus was on stocking the best tea brands in the world, so we became stockists of TWG, Harney & Sons, Steven Smith Teamaker Tea and Tea Repertoire. All four of these tea brands are internationally sold and recognised; with Tea Repertoire having been awarded several Great Taste Awards. We were drawn to selling tea as it is the 2nd most consumed beverage in the world and comes with many great health benefits. During the height of Covid-19, we launched our first online tea site using a different platform to drive online sales due to the Covid-19 lockdown which prevented the operating our face to face offering.

Whilst our service and offering were very well received, we had to adapt and reposition the business to an online-centric offering as the result of the Covid-19 pandemic. With the right marketing strategies, this business will be scalable and as successful as your commitment allows.

Operations

The goal of this tea e-commerce business is to sell high quality tea to tea lovers across Australia. We supply premium tea brands that consumers will not be able to find at their local supermarket and that make brilliant corporate, Christmas and birthday gifts. Tasks involved in running this business day to day include: picking orders, packing and fulfilling orders, customer service, blogging, email marketing and social media posting. All the tea stock is currently being stored across four storage systems that can easily fit into a spare room, office or secure clean storage. The storage systems are included in the sale at no extra cost. This business is the perfect opportunity for someone who wants to work from home and sell a range of products that are versatile, have a long shelf-life, selling to customers with expectations that are easy to manage.

Customers

The business is currently selling to the Australian market with clear opportunities to develop into overseas markets as well. We have a VIP database of loyal customers that joined our program whilst our physical store was open, and have expressed interest in continuing to support us once we moved to be an online-centric offering. We are now starting to use email marketing and our integrated loyalty rewards app on this customer segment. We also have pre-produced high quality, graphite VIP cards and pre-printed high quality letters to go out to new VIP customers.

Our mailing list is growing and we have an active following on social media across multiple channels. We have a database of VIP members and an integrated loyalty program, targeting this customer segment more would likely result in higher sales.

Financials

Whilst the brand is an established one the existing site was launched 3 months ago, replacing the previous 16 month old site, so we could make the online buying experience more centric around post Covid retail conditions. A large amount of money was spent on marketing initially to help launch and grow awareness for the new site, which has helped to drive not only awareness through Google searches but also through unpaid organic traffic. Sales can be easily scaled up instantly through a greater investment in Google Ads and more time dedicated to developing organic SEO through blogs, posts and greater interactions with social media platforms.

Gross profits vary from 50 – 90% per sale, varying on the brand and pricing. The business has low operating costs, especially as all the start up expenses are fully paid. This is a great opportunity for a savvy sales person with a good understanding of online marketing to develop and build on a solid site and an existing customer database.

Prior to launching the new site, the previous site was delivery online sales of around $1,500 a month. It is worth noting, as is identified by our integrated Google traffic data, that there was no site live for a period of 3 months whilst the new site was being developed. The current sales and profit data on the new site is not a true reflection of tangible historical sales.
