Newcastle Airport’s International Expansion Opens New Opportunities for Hunter Businesses

Newcastle Airport Expansion
Newcastle Airport’s transformation into an international gateway is no longer simply a promise of future growth. The expanded terminal is now open, direct international services are operating, and passenger numbers are reaching record levels.
The upgraded international terminal officially opened in September 2025, following a major expansion that increased the terminal’s footprint by almost 50 per cent and introduced facilities capable of supporting both domestic and international flights. Together with the upgraded runway, the development is expected to generate approximately $12.7 billion in economic activity across the Hunter over the next 20 years, attract an additional 850,000 visitors and support more than 4,400 ongoing jobs.
The expansion has more than doubled Newcastle Airport’s potential annual capacity, increasing it from approximately 1.2 million to more than 2.5 million passengers. The terminal also includes flexible swing gates, upgraded baggage and border-processing facilities, aerobridges and the capability to accommodate larger aircraft.
Direct flights between Newcastle and Bali commenced in October 2025, giving Hunter residents their first regular international service beyond Australasia. From March 2026, the service also began providing onward travel to Singapore via Bali, improving the region’s access to one of Asia’s major aviation and commercial hubs.
Passenger demand is already reflecting this increased connectivity. Newcastle Airport recorded its busiest quarter on record during the final three months of 2025, with 340,778 passengers travelling through the terminal. The airport was forecasting approximately 1.334 million passengers for the 2025–26 financial year another record for Newcastle and the Hunter.

What Could Airport Growth Mean for Local Businesses?
Improved air access has the potential to benefit businesses well beyond the airport precinct.
More domestic and international visitors can increase demand for accommodation, tourism experiences, hospitality, transport, retail and professional services throughout Newcastle, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley.
The expansion may also create opportunities for businesses connected with aviation, freight, logistics, food supply, cleaning, maintenance and workforce services. For Hunter manufacturers, agricultural producers and other exporters, improved international infrastructure could eventually provide greater access to overseas customers and supply chains.
Newcastle Airport is also positioned alongside Astra Aerolab and RAAF Base Williamtown, strengthening the region’s growing defence, aerospace and advanced-manufacturing sector. This creates potential flow-on demand for contractors, technical services, training providers and specialist suppliers.
However, airport infrastructure alone does not guarantee success for every local business. Buyers should still assess each opportunity according to its financial performance, customer base, lease conditions, staffing requirements and exposure to changing tourism or consumer demand.
