Why Dione Mauric Loves Business Broking in Regional Queensland
Dione Mauric, co-owner of Advantage Business Sales & Valuations, believes business broking is as much about people as it is about numbers. A former Chartered Accountant, she has built her career supporting clients across Queensland, with a special focus on regional centres.
“I started out specialising in regional sales,” she said. “I just love the people. They’re always welcoming and friendly. It’s a real buzz to know your skills and expertise are genuinely appreciated.”
Her early career took her from Melbourne to overseas roles with Pepsi and the Financial Times. “But my passion is dealing with small to mid-size businesses,” she explained. “Watching family businesses start, grow, evolve, and adapt has always been close to my heart. That’s why business broking is such a good fit for me.”
Building a Brokerage with Stephen
Together with her husband Stephen Wolff, also a Chartered Accountant, Dione decided to establish Advantage Business Sales & Valuations after years working within the franchise space. “We loved selling franchises and helping franchisors grow,” she said. “But we wanted to branch out into a wider range of businesses, including some of the larger sales you don’t always see in that sector.”
The pair are supported by a highly skilled, tightly run team with outsourced support for marketing, buyer sourcing, and documentation. “We keep the business smaller and niche,” Dione explained. “We’re very particular about what clients we take on. That way we can maintain personalised service and deliver the best results.”
Their division of responsibilities reflects their complementary strengths. “Stephen’s the detailed guy. He makes sure every detail is perfect, and surprises kill deals! I can always be confident in what we are presenting,” Dione said. “My role is to manage the communication between buyers and sellers and the negotiation. We work on sales together, but in different roles. It works, and the results speak for themselves.”
Success Stories and Shifting Trends
The past year has been particularly busy, with settlements across a range of industries. One that stands out for Dione was in the home care sector. “We recently settled a large transaction in that space,” she recalled.
“There’s a lot of change happening in the industry, which is creating opportunities for both small and large businesses. Our buyer was an established provider from Sydney wanting to continue to grow, and identified regional Queensland as an ideal target location.”
As with any highly regulated industry, the deal came with challenges. “Red tape and government requirements need to be carefully managed,” Dione explained. “Given it was our first transaction in the sector, it was a great opportunity to learn and add value to our clients. It gave us fresh insight into an industry that’s changing quickly.”
Dione sees this kind of consolidation creating opportunities for both buyers and sellers. “There are small operators who want to move on, retire! And larger businesses are looking to expand. Matching those together is where we come in.”
Regional Focus and Face-to-Face Service
Dione is especially passionate about working in regional Queensland. “For years, I’ve built the business through meeting people face-to-face, shaking hands, and understanding how their businesses operate. Seeing a business in action is the exciting bit”, she said. “Most of our listings come in through referrals and relationships developed over many years.”
Technology has changed the way she works, but she insists it must always support rather than replace personal contact. “We’re entering the brave new world of AI, and I’m passionate about exploring how it can add value,” she said. “But it’s all about balance. People still love the personal touch, particularly when you are dealing with what may be their largest asset.”
Her creative use of online platforms demonstrates this balance. “I’ll run Google Meet calls where I present a business to multiple interested buyers at once. It creates demand, everyone can see there’s competition. We’ve been doing that for years, and it’s really effective.”
Life and Work in Balance
Running a business with her husband doesn’t mean life is all work. “We both have outside interests,” she said. “Stephen’s an avid golfer, and my passion is equestrian. We also have a 12-year-old daughter, so we’re busy. But business broking gives us flexibility and the ability to manage our time effectively.”
That perspective also shapes the advice she gives to other couples considering going into business together. “Define your roles clearly, make sure you’ve got outside interests, and have a bit of fun with it. You spend a third of your life working, so you might as well enjoy it.”
That mix of fun and structure also helps when they work with family businesses. “I’ve handled sales where one couple sells to another. Having lived that experience myself helps me empathise and guide them through. It’s about building trust by showing you understand what they’re going through.”
Women in Business Broking
When Dione began her career, women were few and far between in business broking. “When I first started, I was one of the only women,” she recalled. “The fun part was striving to achieve more sales than most! Now, it’s wonderful to see many women in the industry, and it’s growing every year.”
She compares the shift to what happened in accounting. “Back then, there weren’t many female accountants either. Now, accounting is predominantly women. I think business broking is heading the same way. Emotional intelligence and empathy are crucial in this role, and those skills really add value to clients.”
Looking Ahead
As for the future of the profession, Dione believes technology will transform the processes but not the essence of the role. “Simple, mundane tasks may be automated, but people will always value the experience and emotional connection that skilled brokers bring,” she said.
Or, as she often reminds clients, “We’re not selling lollipops here. We’re selling lifestyle, vision, dreams, and wealth generation. That’s at the very core of what people are trying to achieve. And that still takes a human touch.”
Her ultimate measure of success is straightforward: “We want every client to walk away happy, even if a business doesn’t sell, I want that client to walk out knowing I did my absolute best to make it happen. That’s the standard we set, and that’s how we’ve built our reputation over the years.”
