Inside Advantage Business Sales' Dual Approach to Business Sales in Queensland
When Dione Mauric describes how she and her husband, Stephen Wolff, run their brokerage, she doesn't talk about titles or hierarchy. She talks about teamwork.
“Stephen’s the detailed guy,” she said. “He makes sure everything is perfect because surprises kill deals. I do the communication between buyers and sellers and the negotiation.”
That simple division of responsibilities has helped build Advantage Business Sales & Valuations into one of Queensland's respected business brokerages. Combining meticulous attention to detail with strong communication, the pair have earned a reputation for personalised service, deep regional connections, and embracing innovation without losing sight of the people behind every business sale.
From Franchises to Freedom
The foundations of Advantage were laid long before the business officially launched in 2019.
Both Dione and Stephen are Chartered Accountants who have spent years working with small businesses. Dione began her career in professional practice in Melbourne before taking commercial roles overseas with Pepsi and the Financial Times. Despite the international experience, she found herself continually drawn back to smaller enterprises.
“My passion is dealing with small businesses,” she explained. “Seeing family businesses grow, change, and adapt has always been close to my heart.”
The pair later joined the franchise-focused brokerage group Finn Business Sales. Dione specialised in franchise transactions, while Stephen initially operated a Muffin Break franchise before eventually joining her in business broking.
After almost a decade working within the franchise sector, they decided it was time to broaden their horizons.
“We wanted to branch out into other types of businesses and some larger businesses,” Stephen said. “That was more aligned with our skill set.”
The result was Advantage Business Sales & Valuations, a brokerage designed around flexibility, independence, and a broader range of opportunities.
A Partnership Built on Different Strengths
Running a business with a spouse is not always easy, but Dione and Stephen believe their different personalities are one of their greatest advantages.
Stephen handles much of the technical work, including appraisals, research, and financial analysis. Dione focuses on buyer and seller communication, negotiations, and relationship management.
“We’re very separate in what we do,” she said. “We work together on every sale, but in different roles.”
That separation creates efficiency while reducing overlap. It also allows each partner to focus on the aspects of the job they enjoy most.
For Stephen, that means analysing businesses and ensuring information is accurate and complete. For Dione, it means understanding people, reading situations, and helping transactions progress smoothly.
The arrangement also creates a valuable sounding board when complex situations arise.
“I might be stuck with something and ask Stephen what he thinks,” Dione said. “Then he’ll give me an answer I hadn’t thought about, and vice versa.”
A Boutique Approach
Unlike many growing brokerages, Advantage has deliberately remained small.
The business operates through a network of specialised outsourced support covering marketing, buyer generation, and documentation, while Dione and Stephen remain directly involved in every transaction.
“We’re very particular about what clients we take on,” Dione explained. “We’re also very conscious of not spreading ourselves too thin.”
The philosophy reflects a belief that quality service requires capacity limits. Rather than pursuing rapid growth, the pair focuses on maintaining a manageable number of listings and ensuring every client receives personal attention.
That approach has helped create strong referral networks throughout Queensland and beyond.
“We get a lot of our business through referrals,” Dione said. “That’s how we built the business.”
Queensland at the Core
While based on the Sunshine Coast, Advantage has developed a particularly strong reputation in regional Queensland.
For years, Dione regularly travelled to centres such as Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Charters Towers, and Mackay, meeting business owners face-to-face and learning how their operations worked.
“I just love the people,” she said. “They’re so nice and friendly.”
Those regional relationships remain central to the business today. Many listings originate from referrals, while repeat clients continue returning years after completing transactions.
The brokerage also maintains structured contact programs with buyers long after settlements occur. Stephen said ongoing communication focuses on helping owners understand and improve their business value, ensuring they are well-positioned when it comes time to sell.
“We’ve sold a lot of businesses three times,” he said.
That long-term perspective has become a defining feature of the business.
Balancing Technology and Relationships
Like most professional services firms, Advantage is actively exploring the use of artificial intelligence.
The technology is already helping to improve marketing, streamline administrative tasks, and enhance buyer outreach. According to Stephen, AI has improved efficiency and enabled the team to present businesses to the market more effectively.
“We’re finding it a very positive experience,” he said.
At the same time, both partners are careful not to overestimate its capabilities.
When testing AI-generated appraisals against traditional valuation methods, they found the results could vary significantly depending on the information provided.
“Sometimes it’s wrong, totally wrong,” Dione said.
Stephen agreed that AI remains a tool rather than a replacement for expertise.
“If you’re just going to rely on AI alone, I think you’re going to get some very wild advice,” he said.
The pair sees technology as a way to support experienced professionals, not replace them.
Creating Better Outcomes
One recent transaction highlights the brokerage’s approach.
Advantage completed a significant home-care business sale involving a Sydney buyer seeking expansion opportunities in regional Queensland. The transaction required navigating complex compliance processes and government regulations, creating challenges beyond those of a typical business sale.
“It was a great opportunity to learn,” Dione said.
Another example involved friends who had spent 12 months negotiating the sale of their business directly with a corporate buyer. After becoming frustrated, they sought Advantage’s assistance.
Within three months, the transaction was completed with the same buyer. According to Stephen, the final result included an additional $100,000 in sale price and significantly improved contract terms.
For him, the experience reinforced the value of professional advice.
“People don’t know what they don’t know,” he said.
The couple believes business owners often underestimate the complexity of negotiations, buyer qualification, and transaction structuring. The broker’s role is not simply to introduce buyers and sellers but to protect clients throughout the process.
People Will Always Value Experience
As artificial intelligence, automation, and changing buyer expectations reshape professional services, Dione and Stephen expect business broking to evolve significantly over the next decade.
They believe routine tasks will become increasingly automated, while experienced brokers focus on strategy, advice, and relationships.
“People will always value experience and emotional connection,” Dione said.
That conviction underpins their vision for Advantage. The business will continue adopting new technology where it adds value, while preserving the personal interaction that has defined the brokerage since its inception.
After more than 15 years in business sales, Dione still measures success in simple terms.
“If a business doesn’t sell, I want that client to walk out knowing I did my absolute best to make it happen,” she said.
For a brokerage built on trust, expertise, and partnership, that standard remains the benchmark against which every transaction is judged.
