Tasmanian Buyer Enquiries Up 53% as State Remains Most Affordable

1. Tasmanian Buyer Enquiries Up 53% as State Remains Most Affordable
Tasmania recorded the lowest average asking price of any state or territory on Bsale in the September 2026 quarter, at $532,624, about 28% below the national average of $740,955.
Buyers are noticing. Enquiries for businesses for sale in Tasmania rose about 53% on a year earlier, the strongest growth of any state or territory and well ahead of the national increase of 28%.
The combination of accessible prices and rising interest makes Tasmania one of the more notable smaller markets on Bsale, particularly for first-time buyers and owner-operators.
These insights are based on advertised asking prices entered by brokers and sellers on Bsale. Asking prices are not verified by Bsale and are not final sale prices. They may be quoted walk-in walk-out (WIWO) or plus stock at value (SAV), and may include plant, equipment, vehicles or freehold property.
Australia's Most Affordable State
Tasmania's average asking price of $532,624 was the lowest of any state or territory at 30 September 2026, about $140,000 below New South Wales ($673,143) and $370,000 below Western Australia ($903,336), the highest-priced state.

Tasmania has been the lowest-priced state on Bsale in each of the past five quarters, suggesting a consistent pattern rather than a short-term dip in prices.
Hobart and Launceston
Hobart, which accounts for about six in ten businesses for sale in Tasmania, averaged $618,335, fifth among the capital cities and below the national average.
Launceston & Northern Tasmania averaged $404,615, the second most affordable regional market in Australia on Bsale, behind only the Blue Mountains. It may appeal to buyers looking for an established business at a lower entry point outside the larger mainland cities.
Because asking prices may include stock, equipment or freehold property, buyers should always check what an asking price covers.
Buyer Enquiries Up 53%
Buyer enquiries for Tasmanian businesses rose about 53% on a year earlier, the fastest growth of any state or territory on Bsale. Enquiries eased slightly on a busy June quarter but remained well above any quarter before it.

Even with that growth, Tasmania attracted a smaller share of national enquiries than its share of businesses for sale. For buyers, that means less competition per listing than in most other states, with room to compare opportunities.
Enquiry was concentrated around Hobart, including Derwent Park and Moonah, with interest also in Burnie, George Town, Launceston and the towns around it.
The most-enquired Tasmanian listings included an Asian grocery with wholesale, retail and online sales, a managed IT and cyber security business, a traditional bakery and cafe, a fully managed IGA supermarket with freehold available, and a motorcycle dealership.
Businesses Marked as Sold
Tasmania accounted for about 2% of businesses marked as sold on Bsale in the September 2026 quarter, with fewer recorded than a year earlier. Most were in Launceston and Northern Tasmania.
Their average advertised asking price of $348,175 was below the national figure of $497,740, but with only a small number of businesses marked as sold, the average can move sharply and should be read as indicative only.
Not every completed sale is recorded as sold on Bsale. Brokers often withdraw listings to maintain confidentiality, and automated broker feeds can mark several listings as sold at once, so in a smaller market like Tasmania, sold figures are best read as a broad indicator of activity.
With buyer enquiries up 53% and a median of 202 days between a business being listed and marked as sold, the rise in buyer interest may take several months to flow through.
What This Means for Buyers and Sellers
For buyers, Tasmania offers the lowest entry point of any state on Bsale, with less competition per listing than most other markets. It may suit first-time buyers and owner-operators looking for an established business with lower upfront capital. Buyers new to the process can start with our guide to buying a business in Australia, and should line up advisers for due diligence before making an offer.
For sellers, buyer interest in Tasmanian businesses has grown faster than anywhere else in the country over the past year. Businesses with up-to-date financials, an information memorandum and realistic pricing are best placed to turn that interest into a result.
