The Truth Behind Burnout in Business Broking

The Truth Behind Burnout in Business Broking
In the world of business broking, we are the invisible glue that holds transactions together, until we’re not. It’s an industry that often looks shiny from the outside: big deals, big commissions, and the satisfaction of helping someone sell their life’s work or begin a new chapter. But what’s rarely talked about is the toll it takes.
Business brokers are one of the only professional service providers who work entirely unpaid until the job is done. No retainers. No hourly fees. If the deal doesn’t settle, we don’t get paid no matter how many hours we’ve invested. We wear the hats of negotiator, advisor, therapist, and sometimes, emotional punching bag.
Our clients are often stressed; financially, emotionally, and mentally and we feel every bit of it. Emails at 11pm. Texts at 5am. Unrealistic expectations. And if the buyer falls through? It’s our fault. We’re “not doing enough,” even if we’ve worked for months for free.
This article is not a complaint, it’s a call to action.
In the past five years, I’ve watched brilliant agents walk away. Not because they couldn’t sell, but because they couldn’t withstand the emotional whiplash and constant pressure. If we want this industry to thrive, we need to stand together; brokers, agencies, associations and say ‘We will not tolerate disrespect, emotional abuse, or unrealistic demands’.
Support, education, and boundaries are essential if we want to attract and keep great agents. Because the truth is, being a business broker isn’t always pretty. But when supported, respected, and protected, it can be one of the most rewarding careers in the world.
